Mubahila: The Golden Proof of Islam’s Truth, Shia Authenticity

Mubahila, one of the most significant events in the history of Prophet Muhammad’s (PBUH) mission, is hailed as the "golden proof" of the truth of Islam and Shia Islam, according to Hojat-ol-Islam Seyyed Mohammad Reza Hashemi Tehrani, director of the Anvar Al-Hekma Higher School.

Speaking to IQNA, Hashemi Tehrani emphasized the event’s profound implications for humanity.

"When the Prophet (PBUH) refers to Imam Ali (AS) as his own soul, it is proven for all of humanity until the Day of Judgment that the truth of this faith and school of thought is not something to be overlooked," Hashemi Tehrani stated.

Mubahila, a Quranically documented event (Quran 3:61), occurred between Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and the Christian scholars of Najran, Yemen. The Prophet (PBUH) challenged them to a spiritual duel, invoking divine curse upon the liars. He brought his daughter Fatimah (AS), her husband Imam Ali (AS), and their sons Hassan (AS) and Hussein (AS), declaring, "If anyone disputes with you concerning him after the knowledge which has come to you, say: 'Come, let us call our sons and your sons, our women and your women, ourselves and yourselves, then let us pray earnestly, so as to place the curse of Allah upon those who lie'" (Quran 3:61).

Hashemi Tehrani highlighted the Christians’ reaction to the Prophet’s (PBUH) choice of companions: "When they saw the Prophet (PBUH) bring his daughter, son-in-law, and grandsons, they intellectually concluded that he must be speaking the truth. If he were not, he would not risk the lives of his loved ones."

Mubahila is not exclusive to the Prophet (PBUH) and his family; it is a religious tradition practiced by the companions of the Ahl al-Bayt (AS) and encouraged by the Imams. "This shows that religious teachings are backed by a strong existential and metaphysical foundation," Hashemi Tehrani explained. "Otherwise, one would fear to risk their identity and invoke divine punishment."
